NAVADMIN 191/08 Guidelines for wear of the new Navy Physical Training Uniform (PTU)

NAVADMIN 191/08 released 9 July 2008 provides guidance for wear of the Navy Physical Training Uniform (PTU).

  • The Navy PTU is designed primarily for group/unit fitness activities and the Navy semi-annual Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA).
  • The PTU can be worn on/off-base for fitness and leisure activities unless otherwise determined by regional coordinators or Commanding Officers.
  • When conducting group/unit fitness activities the Navy PTU will be worn with the shirt fully tucked into the shorts.  PTU shorts will be worn fully on the waist.
  • The PTU shorts will not extend below the top of the knee.
  • Athletic socks will be worn and not extend above mid calf (low cut socks are permitted).
  • The wearing of the PTU at sea will be at the discretion of the Commanding Officer.
  • During individual PT the shirt may remain un-tucked from the shorts.
  • The PTU will not be worn while in a duty status or when conducting official business on base (Medical, PSD, Galleys).
  • The PTU is not authorized to be worn in lieu of the working, dress or service uniform while in a light duty status.
  • Long sleeve PTU shirts and Navy Watch Caps are permitted when weather conditions warrant.
  • Compression shorts are authorized but must not be visible while standing and be black or Navy Blue in color.
