24 Month Rollout of the New Navy Working Uniform
NAVADMIN 343/08 Announced the 24 month Fleet rollout of the new Navy Working Uniform (NWU) beginning in December 2008.
The NWU is designed to accommodate male and female sailors and will be the standard working uniform ashore. It is intended for year-round wear.
The Navy Working Uniform replaces Working Utilities, Tropical Working Uniforms, Wash Khakis, the Winter Working Blue Uniform, Aviation Working Green and Non-tactical/environmental usage of Camouflage Utility Uniforms (CUU). It is designed to minimize the requirement for various cold weather gear.
NWU Occassions for Wear:
The NWU is designed to be worn at sea and ashore in environments that don't require special clothing (flight deck, engine room etc.)
Unless otherwise prescribed by the regional commander, the NWU is authorized to be worn at all facilities on base, while commuting (routine stops while commuting are not authorized) via POV or public transportation. It may also be worn on Government/Military contracted to/from OCONUS locations.
Existing Navy Uniform Regulations/Grooming Standards apply when wearing the NWU.
Regional Commanders/Commanding Officers may authorize the below modifications for environmental extremes:
-NWU Shirt may be removed on job sites or in work spaces.
-NWU Trousers may be worn unbloused on job sites or in work spaces.
-During inclement weather/winter the parka hood is authorized in addition to head gear. Black leather gloves are also authorized.
The NWU will be available for purchase via the below Navy Exchange Uniform Centers:
DEC 08 - Navy Leadership; via Navy Exchange Uniform Support Center
JAN 09 - TIDEWATER
APR 09 - SOUTHEAST
JUL 09 - NORTHEAST
OCT 09 - CAPITAL REGION
JAN 10 - WESTERN/NORTHWEST
APR 10 - GULF REGION
JUL 10 - HAWAII
OCT 10 - EUROPE/JAPAN/GUAM
The Navy Working Uniform mandatory wear date is 31 December 2010
All existing working uniforms will continue to be authorized for wear until Dec 2010. Sailors who have not been issued NWUs at RTC or who purchased NWUs must maintain their current Working Uniforms until the NWU is available in the area/region they are assigned.
Sailors are reminded that FY08 and FY09 clothing allowances have been adjusted to facilitate purchasing four Navy Working Uniform sets (shirts and trousers) by December 2010.
Sailors should refer to NAVADMIN 343/08 for more detailed information about the NWU rollout and NWU wear. Additionally, the Navy Uniform Matters website has videos about the NWU.

I am very unhappy in how the Navy states that we don't have to switch to the new uniforms until December 2010, but all the commands in Virginia have made us change into our new uniforms as of May 2009. I haven't even gotten the 2nd clothing allowance to buy the rest of the uniforms. What the H***, why bother setting a date when no one abides to it??? I am now in debt until Sept. of this year because of the Major Rush to put on a Waste of Military Money New Uniforms. My uniform was just fine. I hope I don't fall off a ship, they will never find me in these blue uniforms????

I haven't gotten anything but my $680 allowance Oct 08. The CVN-71 has an August 1st date for the NWUs and I too am spending my own money. I will be going to personnel tomorrow to complain.
