Improved ABU (IABU) on the way in 2010

The Air Force has announced that an Improved ABU (IABU) top is under development and should be ready for issue or purchase in late 2010.   Airman have complained that the  current combat ABU is too heavy and hot.

800 Airman participated in IABU lab and field testing. Testing is now complete and the new IABU is made of lighter material and is a 50/50 mix of cotton/nylon the ABU program office said.  The Air Force will submit the new IABU material to the Defense Procurement Agency which will then award contracts for production.

ABU pants will not be replaced due to durability issues.  The new IABU will be slightly re-designed and is without front inside pockets to reduce weight and heat.

The new IABU top will replace the current combat ABU top through attrition.  Airmen can continue wearing the current ABU top as the new IABU top is phased in.

Airman can read more about the Improved ABU in the Air Force Times.
