Air Force PTU Guidance
Air Force PTU guidance was published by Air Force A-1 this month. The new guidance replaces previous guidance in Air Force Instruction 36-2903.
According to the message items making up the Air Force PTU are now considered Air Force Uniform items and strict attention will be given to every PTU item just as with ABU or Air Force Dress Uniform items.
The Air Force PTU is mandatory during organized PT and during the Air Force physical fitness assessment.
Message Highlights are:
Air Force PTU/IPTU during personal PT
-During limited visibility, reflective belts/armbands required wearing the optional running shorts.
-Conservative footwear worn.
-White socks worn.
-Air Force PTU jacket zipped halfway between waist and collar.
-Air Force PTU running pants waistband to rest within 2 inches of the natural waistline. Both pant legs zipped to within 1 inch of the bottom.
-Air Force PTU shorts and running shorts will rest within 2 inches of the natural waistline.
-Short Sleeve Air Force PTU shirt will be tucked into shorts/running pants as all times. Sleeves are not to be removed or cut.
-Long Sleeve PTU shirt (Same as above).
-Only black or dark blue spandex may be worn under the PTU and IPTU.
-Headgear may be authorized by Commanders, but will consist only of either a solid black or dark blue ball cap with the Air Force symbol or logos. Headgear will be worn outdoors only.
-Bandannas are not authorized unless permitted by medical waiver.
-PTU cold weather accessories my be worn outdoors only.
-Knit watch cap will only be solid black, dark blue or sage green only (no logos).
-Gloves will be solid black or dark blue.
-Scarves/earmuffs will be solid black.
-Green or black fleece jacket is not authorized with the PTU/IPTU.
-The IPTU running suit top/bottom may not be mixed with the current PTU running suit.
-The PTU/IPTU shorts lining only may be removed, nether uniform alterations are authorized.
-Headphones are authorized on designated running areas and inside fitness centers, unless prohibited by commanders.
-Air Force personal grooming and appearance standards apply during Air Force physical fitness activities. (One exception is long female hair will be secured but may have loose ends)
-Proper military customs and courtesies apply. Saluting due to rank is not required.
Few exceptions to the Air Force PTU/IPTU policy are at the discretion of commanders. Temporary adjustments may also be made for safety concerns or when deployed.
