Military Uniform Gouge: Navy Announces Two New Working Uniforms (Type II and Type III)
Navy Announces Two New Working Uniforms (Type II and Type III)
On 8 Jan 2010 the Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs announced that two new Navy Working Uniforms would be available to the fleet in FY11.
NAVADMIN 374/09 announced the new NWU Type II and III uniforms. Both NWU Types are considered organizational clothing to be provided to Sailors by authorized commands.
Navy Working Uniform (NWU) Type II (Desert Digital Camouflage)
To be worn by special warfare personnel and Sailors in support during deployment and pre-deployment training. The NWU Type II is a four color camouflage uniform with anchor, Constitution and eagle (ACE) logo embedded in the print. The branch head within Navy's personnel, plans and policy division, Capt. Vince Drouillard said "Sailors, other than Navy special warfare operators and supporting Sailors, will continue to wear the current tricolor desert camouflage utility uniform in desert environments when issued by authorizing commands."
Navy Working Uniform (NWU) Type III (Woodland Digital Camouflage)
To be worn in non-desert areas and in the U.S.. The NWU Type III is a woodland digital camouflage uniform that has four colors and also has the ACE logo embedded in the print.
Sailors can expect to see the uniforms in the fleet in late 2011 with priority to deploying combat and direct command support units. Both new NWUs will have an matching pattern Gortex jacket.

I retired from the USN a mere 15 years ago as a CDR and former CO. I'm in San Antonio now and the other day encountered a sailor who appeared to be impersonating a Marine. But no, it was a sailor in the latest round of USN uniform changes. Yikes! And then blue camies - thought only the Air Force was getting that weird! Poor old USN -- what have ye done? For the fleet, looks like every day is Halloween. So sad. Reply to this

Finally, a suitable uniform for all of our sailors working on the ground and non-traditional environments. The public is generally unaware of how many sailors are currently deployed on the ground in support of combat operations. This uniform is a step in the right direction, considering the Navy's dirt sailors have been wearing the generic tricolor desert uniform for 20 years now. Why are we still keeping the old tricolor though? Wouldn't it just be easier, and more practical, to eventually issue the NWU type II to all sailors taking on an assignment in desert environments?
