Army Directive 2011-11 announces Velcro now Optional on Army ACUs
Army Directive 2011-11 announced the below changes to Wear of the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) effective 14 June 2001.
1. The ACU Patrol cap is primary headgear for all Soldiers as the duty uniform headgear. Commanders retain the authority to prescribe the beret for special events such as parades or changes of command or responsibility. The black beret will be retained and warn with the dress uniforms.

The new Army policy allows Soldiers to sew on rank insignia, name and service tapes. Sill badges ( Airborne, pathfinder, combat action, combat infantryman's, expert infantryman's badge etc. ) will also be authorized for sewing. Those badges are currently provided in painted metal and have to be pinned to the uniform. The new policy will allow Soldiers to sew those badges to the uniform.
Combat and unit patches on the left and right sleeve and the U.S. flag will remain Velcro-only.
Soldiers should refer to Army Directive 2011-11 for complete details.
