The Army should just use MARPAT. Now we will have to got through all of the BS about having the correct kit to go along with the multicam. Woodland MARPAT, desert MARPAT, arid MARPAT, urban MARPAT. For all branches.

I'm US NAVY Retired. My experience was ship board on 7-month deployments. I learned from my 2-years senior brother, to pack 15 to 30 underpants and socks, you I could keep them in rotation between my locker, laundry bag at my rack, and ship's laundry. I also kept the big containers of laundry soap and bleach in my locker, and refilled smaller Rubbermaid(tm) containers when I went ashore to use laundromats in the base housing or PX to wash civilian clothes. A Downy Ball for softener is optional. As the deployment ended, I discarded any unserviceable items to reduce my offload. Fashion wise, I try to avoid the "jeans and tee shirt" by buying collared shirts, shorts, button shirts, and I either mend or discard damaged items. Fisherman's sunglasses at WalMart cost under $20, and are less stressful to lose. Also welding supply stores carry stylish UV rated safety glasses. As you visit ports, a RF Scanner will scan the airwaves revealing sounds. One or three USB audio recorders from Radio Shack can save sounds and memos.

For reading material, there are a whole lot of varieties of digital readers now... You could carry a whole library with you. The readers designed specifically for reading only (not full tablet computers) are cheaper and can last over a week on a charge.

WE are becoming more like the Army everyday. Marines have a tradition of wearing sleeves down in the spring and summer per their CO. Most now are combat veterans and have earned this right for state side duty per their CO.
Let us be the Marines and not like the Army.
I would carry the cold weather stuff. To me its better to have it than not. I am deploying in October after a JRTC rotation and I am still working out my pack. Try to consolidate and mailing to yourself works well.
